Hotel Tropico Latino celebrates top Santa Teresa surfers

Hotel Tropico Latino celebrates young, talented Costa Rica surfers, like Anthony Fillingim of Santa Teresa, who are leading Costa Rica to the top of the world surf scene. Costa Rica will host this year’s ISA 2016 World Surfing Games from August 6 to 14.

Costa Rica surfer Anthony Fillingim, photo by Alfredo Barquero[/caption] Santa Teresa, Costa Rica surfer Anthony Fillingim is the new leader in the Costa Rica National Surfing Circuit 2016 in the men’s open division, after winning the Otis Eyewear Cup held June 18 to 19 in Santa Teresa. Before a hometown crowd, Fillingim made national history when he scored the first perfect 20 in a finals heat ever in Costa Rica and won the National Surfing Circuit competition.

Just before International Surfing Day on June 20, Santa Teresa offered spectacular waves and summer weather in rainy season, along with a big turnout of enthusiastic fans at the competition. Hotel Tropico Latino waiter Marco Rojas reached the semifinals of the COPA Otis Eyewear, making his colleagues at the hotel proud.

“Congratulations to Marco Rojas for his participation in the national surfing circuit and having reached the semifinals. We are very proud to have such a sportsman and responsible staff member!” posted Hotel Tropico Latino on its Facebook page.

Surfer Marco Rojas is a waiter at Hotel Tropico Latino in Santa Teresa Costa Rica[/caption] Santa Teresa’s Fillingim is looking to add Costa Rica national champion to his long list of titles. He is the 2015 Latin American champion, member of the 2015 World Surfing Champion team from Costa Rica, and is a silver medalist in the 2014 ISA World Surfing Championships. He will compete in the 2016 season Grand Final Championships REEF of Costa Rica’s Kölbi National Surfing Circuit on July 15, 16 and 17 in Playa Hermosa by Jaco.

Young, talented surfers from Costa Rica like Fillingim are making a name for the country as a surfing powerhouse in international surfing competitions around the world. Surfers like international star Carlos Muñoz, six-time world medalist Leilani McGonagle, and her brother Noe Mar McGonagle who is ranked 16th in the world by the International Surfing Association (ISA).

This year Costa Rica will host the ISA 2016 World Surfing Games from August 6 to 14 in Jaco Beach on the Central Pacific Coast. National teams from 33 countries on five continents will compete against defending champion Team Costa Rica for the title. The Costa Rica National Surf Team made national history last year when they were crowned World Surfing Champions for the first time at the 2015 World Surfing Games held in Nicaragua. Costa Rica hosted the World Surfing Games once before, in 2009 at nearby Hermosa Beach.
